CHILD SAFETY STATEMENT
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Janine who has been overseas for 8 weeks and thank you again to Isabelle who did an amazing job of covering for her. Janine is slowly getting back into work mode.
With so much illness around this month I need to send a reminder that children should not be attending school if they are unwell with cold symptoms. COVID is still amongst us and the Influenza A & B strains are particularly nasty this winter.
This week we had Tom Sexton, Executive Director of DOBCEL, visit St. Patrick's. He was very impressed with our new building and surrounding grounds. We are embarking on creating a new master plan moving forward. It will include updating our administration area, outfitting the science room and renovating the hall and old school house.
Our condolences to Anthony, Clare, Emily and William Leddin. Anthony's mother and the children's grandmother passed away last week.

CONCUSSION - IMPORTANT INFORMATION
If your child has experienced concussion, it is important that you follow recommended medical advice. Returning to school can be a graduated approach with the aim of increasing tolerance to a full day, the same situation could occur with sport. It is always important to check with your doctor and seek medical treatment after a child sustains a concussion.
It is important to inform the school if your child has sustained a concussion outside of the school setting so we can monitor for ongoing symptoms and adapt activities if required.
This factsheet link below from the Royal Children’s Hospital is valuable to read and understand.

There is also a great evidence-based app from the Murdoch children’s research institute that walks you through what to do in the result of a concussion.

HANDS ON LEARNING
The Foundations of Hands on Learning (HoL)
Projects that add value to the community:
Connecting young people with their community is a perfect opportunity for them to experience belonging, take pride in their achievements and foster self-esteem.
This year our HoL teams have been working on, ‘A chance to give back’, to our school and wider community.
This term we are turning our attention to assisting our wider community. Last term, the Year 5/6 Hands on Learning team had the opportunity to visit “Food Share” in Warrnambool. The students were greeted by Amanda, who is the Executive Officer. She showed the students around and explained why Food Share was created and the areas they cover. They then assisted Amanda to pack a number of emergency food boxes for those in need.
The students were proud to take 31kg of food donations with them. On Tuesday, our Year 4 team visited the Port Fairy Community Services Centre. We’re starting to build a project based relationship with the Kindergarten and have been asked to make some planter boxes and a new shelving unit for their toy trucks. The students spent some time assessing the areas where these items will go and taking the required measurements. They will now draw up some plans and liaise with the Kinder teacher about their progress.
The HoL students are very excited to be giving back to the kindergarten community.
