CHILD SAFETY STATEMENT
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Carers,
What a Weekend! There are so many people to thank, who volunteered their time to organise and work the St Patrick's BBQ at the Folk Festival. Bree Porter, who did an amazing job of organising the event, Belinda Brown for ordering the food and drinks, Rhea Thomas for rostering the volunteers, Anthony & Clare Leddin for their tireless site management over the weekend, and all the volunteers who manned the BBQ in extremely challenging conditions. Then there were the teams who set up and packed up. It takes a huge volume of people and hours to make the event a success. Despite the hot weather, we are very happy with the final result, making it a worthwhile fundraising event. We wish to urge as many parents as possible to get involved next year.
I'd also like to thank the St Patrick's Koroit leaders, Michael and Celeste Lane and their team of volunteers, who were amazing to work with.
NAPLAN is underway for our Year 3 & 5 students. They are approaching the sessions confidently and calmly.
The Foundation and Yrs 5 & 6 classes have their Term 1 mass with Fr Bill on Friday at 12.30pm. This will be in the open learning space at the school. Families are welcome to join them.
Plans have begun for the St Patrick's Day celebrations. As it falls on a Sunday, we will devote Monday March 18 to the special occasion. A Time Capsule was placed inside a wall in our school entrance in 1999 and is due to be opened on St Patrick's Day in 2024. It will be interesting to see what the students in 1999 decided to put into the capsule to commemorate what school was like 25 years ago. Each class will place items from 2024 in a time capsule to be placed in the wall and opened in 2049. A video will be taken to share with the community.
Families are welcome to join us at St Patrick's Church for our St Patrick's Day Mass at 12.30pm. The day will include a special hot dog lunch, games and St Pat's Got Talent Quest in the afternoon.

FOLK FESTIVAL PARADE
Last Friday night saw many excited students and their families join the Warrnambool Pipe Band in opening the Port Fairy Folk Festival. Students and their families gathered at the Fiddler’s Green and paraded down the main street, waving beautiful sea sculptures they had created at school.
Thank you to all those who joined us. It was lovely to see so many of our students and their families join in this wonderful community event.

CLASS NEWS - YEAR 4
Kensuke’s Kingdom - Novel Study
Term One, Year 4 students have been studying the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom. As a class we enjoyed this novel greatly. It has been a great experience to assist us to improve our reading, vocabulary, spelling and writing.
We would like to share our reflections about our thoughts on the book.
SPOILER ALERT: Do not read any further if you want to read the book yourself!
In class we read Kensuke's Kingdom. It was a great book about a family and a man named Kensuke. I enjoyed it but in the end it was a little bit scary and sad. I believe it was a very emotional book because it had lots of feelings. My favourite chapter was 'Killer Men Come' because I was scared and nervous, and I felt like I was there. I felt lots of different emotions like happy, sad, nervous and scared. I thought it was a great book. - Matilda | In class we read Kensuke's Kingdom. I believe it was a very emotive book and had a lot of interesting words. I enjoyed the book Kensuke's Kingdom because a bunch of different things happened to keep the audience entertained and something was always going on. My favourite part was when the killer men came, it made me feel nervous and I felt like I was actually there. I felt happy, sad, nervous and scared all at the same time. - Amala | My favourite part was when Kensuke saved Michael and Stella and became friends. Also, when they saw Kensuke's cave had lots of stuff like a sheet, paint, table etc., I felt surprised at the end when Kensuke didn't come on the Peggy Sue with them. He instead stayed with his orangutan but I think that was a good idea. I just didn't expect it. I was expecting Kensuke to go on the boat and drop him off in Japan. - Maggie |
My favourite part was when Michael fell off the Peggy Sue and struggled to live. It was very interesting and sad because Michael just left Stella. I'm glad Stella didn't die. - Taj | I enjoyed the book, Kensuke's Kingdom, because you will not know if something bad happens until it happens. Kensuke's Kingdom is the best! - Tilly | I enjoyed Kensuke's kingdom because it is a little scary and I like it a little scary. My favourite part was when Kensuke took Michael fishing and told him his story. - Sully |
I enjoyed Kensuke's Kingdom because it was full of action and it was funny but sometimes it was sad. - Harvey | My favourite part of Kensuke's Kingdom was when Kensuke saved Michael’s life. - Darcy | In class we read Kensuke's Kingdom. I believe that this book was sad but it was also happy, which is very, very, good. - Jack |
I strongly believe Kensuke's Kingdom was a beautiful and quiet story. Kensuke's Kingdom was about Kensuke and Michael. Michael fell off the boat and Kensuke saved him. They lived on the island until Michael was rescued. - Henry | In class we read Kensuke's Kingdom. I believe that the book was interesting because it went up and down like a rollercoaster. My favourite part was when Michael fell off the bow of the boat because it was tense. I felt sad at the end because Michael was leaving Kensuke alone. Michael's parents came and saved him but Kensuke wanted to stay behind with the orangutans. - Bonnie | In class we read Kensuke's Kingdom. I think it was a bit of a sad book because there were killer men. I enjoyed the book because there was a happy ending, his mum and dad found him. My favourite part was when Michael got a letter from Kensuke's son Micha. At the end of the book I felt sad because the killer men came and killed two mother monkeys. - Nelly |
I enjoyed the book, Kensuke's Kingdom, because there was always extreme action and that Kensuke was in the second world war! - Wilton | My favourite part is when Kensuke says he has to stay behind because he has to protect the animals. This shows that Kensuke is loyal. - Eli | Our class read Kensuke's Kingdom and I think it was sad when Kensuke refused to come with Michael. - Poppy |
I think Kensuke's Kingdom is an interesting book and you never know which way it's going to go and Michael's life keeps on changing. - Billy | In class we read Kensuke's Kingdom. It was a very good book because Kensuke survived on the island for so long and he became friends with the orangutans and the gibbons. - Conor | I like Kensuke's Kingdom. I think it is a bit weird that he didn't leave to go find his family but overall it was amazing because Michael was rescued by his family. That means it is good but I think it could be better. - George |
I enjoyed the book, Kensuke's Kingdom, even though they split up, it was still a happy ending. Also, they are best friends and my favourite part was the time when they were fishing and when Kensuke told the story about his life. - Hudson | I enjoyed the book Kensuke's Kingdom because the book was like a roller coaster because his life was too perfect at one stage. But then his life was not the best. I think that Kensuke's Kingdom is the best book. - Lilly | My favourite parts of the story was when Kensuke and Michael went fishing for octopus, also when Kensuke and Micheal went to explore on the beach to find majestic shells and lastly Kensuke's cave was good. - Will |
* Freya, Nellie, Elsa and Sawyer were absent for this reflection lesson.

SPECIAL DAYS
SCHOOLTV - PARENTING STYLES
Raising children can bring great joy as you watch them grow and develop into unique individuals. The relationship parents and caregivers have with their children will have a huge influence on their lives. Most parents learn about parenting ‘on the job’ and grow into their role with experience.
Whilst there are several parenting styles discussed in this special report, children benefit most when parents are warm and loving, providing clear guidance and support. Understanding more about different parenting styles and their affects on children, will help you decide what kind of style you may want to adopt.
To help you determine which style of parenting you use, complete the quiz below. Once completed, a report can be emailed to you with your results.
